Sydney - A petition for the release of a jailed Australian journalist was presented to the Egyptian consulate in Sydney Monday, a news report said.
More than 150 000 Australians signed the petition for the release of reporter Peter Greste and his Al Jazeera colleagues, held by Egyptian authorities for alleged links to the banned Muslim Brotherhood, Australian broadcaster ABC reported.
The petition included signatures from more than 100 news organisations around the world, it said. Similar petitions were also sent to Egyptian diplomatic missions in other countries.
Ten Network journalist Hugh Riminton said the Egyptian vice consul told him the jailed reporters would have access to an appeals process.
"That gives some grounds for optimism, but we need to keep up the pressure," Riminton said.
