Abuja - The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has commended Germany for supporting the Commission’s various integration initiatives.
The initiatives includes the promotion of regional peace and security.
According to the a press statement by the regional body, Salamatu Hussaini Suleiman, the Commission Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security gave the commendation when she received a German delegation.
She said the support channelled through organizations such as the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) had resulted in excellent relations between ECOWAS and the country.
She used the opportunity to brief the delegation comprising the Deputy Chairman of the German parliamentary group in charge of Foreign Affairs and Defence Policy, Dr. Andreas Schockenhoff, his adviser Mr. Hans-Joachim Falenski and the German Ambassador to Nigeria Her Excellency Mrs. Dorothee Janetzke-Wenzel, on the Commission’s achievements and ongoin reforms.
She also explained the structure of the Political Affairs, Peace and Security Commission, made up of the Political Affairs, Peacekeeping and Regional Security and the Early Warning Directorates.
The ECOWAS Director of Political Affairs, Dr Abdel-Fatau Musah, and the Chief of Staff, ECOWAS Standby Force, Brig.-Gen. Hassan Lai, who is also Acting Director of Peace keeping and Regional Security, and an official from the Early Warning Directorate, took turns to explain the functions and activities of their directorates.
The German Ambassador thanked the ECOWAS officials for the briefing and commended the Commission for the progress achieved in regional meeting integration and development.
The German delegation promised to share the outcome of the Abuja meeting with their colleagues back home and pledged Germany’s continuous collaboration with the ECOWAS Commission in its quest for the maintenance of peace and security in the Region.
