Police arrest 22 as rival youth groups clash in Minna

28 June 2014, 16:23

Abujka - The Police in Niger on Friday said they arrested 22 members of rival youth groups that clashed in Maitumbi area of Minna following a reprisal attack by one of the groups.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, ASP Richard Oguche, made this known to journalists in Minna.

He said the restive youths invaded Angwan Rogo and Challenge areas from Gbedeyin area over the killing of one of them in a clash last week.

Oguche said the youths, armed with dangerous weapons, invaded that part of the town and caused panic and residents scampering for safety immediately after Juma’at prayers.

He said the youths killed a man who was taking his wife for delivery when the couple ran into the violent group.

According to the PPRO, the husband was attacked with machete leading to his death.

His wife, however, gave birth minutes after the murder of her husband

The PPRO said that the police have since restored normalcy in the area.

He also confirmed the arrest of one person in connection with the killing of a resident last week.

Oguche said the police was in control of the situation and advised residents to go about their normal duties without fear.
