Renamo ends 1992 Mozambique peace deal

22 October 2013, 09:38

Maputo - Mozambique's ex-rebels Renamo have declared the end of a 1992 peace deal after government forces attacked and took over their base on Monday.

"This irresponsible attitude of the commander in chief of the country's security forces signals the end of the Rome Peace Accords," said Renamo spokesperson Fernando Mazanga, referring to President Armando Guebuza.

Mazanga said Afonso Dhlakama, who had returned to the former Renamo civil war stronghold a year ago with a force of armed bodyguards because he feared for his safety, managed to escape to an undisclosed location.

"He's called me and says that he's in good health," he said.

Defence ministry spokesperson Cristovao Chume told reporters government forces took control of the base in response to an earlier attack on an army post by Renamo fighters.

Neither Chume nor Mazanga gave any details of casualties.
