Bamako - At least 39 people, including many children,
drowned when an overcrowded boat cantered on the Niger River between Mopti and
Timbuktu, local officials said Sunday evening in Mopti.
The regional civil defence team said the accident happened on
Friday evening, near the town of Konna. About 200 people were able to swim to
safety, and several of them were injured.
Several passengers were still reported still missing late on
Sunday. The government in Bamako ordered an investigation. Officials said it
