Cape Town – The US has reportedly denied claims that it is funding attempts to “overthrow” the Kenyan government.
This comes after Kenyan police on Thursday fired teargas to break up an anti-government demonstration in Nairobi, with Cabinet Secretary Francis Kimemia accusing the US development agency USaid of funding the protests.
But according to a BBC report, US ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec dismissed the claims as “false”.
The US was accused of trying to influence voters not to back President Uhuru Kenyatta in last year's election.
Kenyatta is facing trial at the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity over violence following the 2007 election. He denies the charges.
