Harare - There were massive celebrations across Zimbabwe on Thursday following suggestions incumbent President Robert Mugabe had retained power by beating his closest rival Morgan Tsvangirai.
Preliminary results suggested Mugabe and his Zanu (PF) party had garnered a resounding lead in the five provinces of Manicaland, Masvingo, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East and Mashonald West.
More interestingly, Zanu PF snatched away Masvingo province, winning all the 26 seats from Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
Chants of “Bhora mugedhi waya,” the Zanu PF election slogan meaning, Zanu PF ball has hit the back of the net, reverberated as supporters celebrated.
They poured scorn on Tsvangirai and his Movement for Democratic Change after the former prime Minister called a press conference in Harare to dismiss the elections.
Supporters interviewed on the ground by CAJ News dismissed Tsvangirai as "not sincere" and "selfish".
Even some MDC supporters acknowledged the results as a true reflection of the voting pattern.
"How can a party win election when it is busy importing and imposing candidates from other political parties such as Dr Simba Makoni from Mavambo / Dawn / Kusile?
"How can a leader in his sober senses remove true MDC supporters and replace them with little known Zanu Ndonga driver - Reketai Semwayo? We knew that people's patience has been overstretched, and that they would hit back with venom," said Cherechedzai Machirori, an MDC activist for Dangamvura, Mutare.
Timothy Mukurazhizha of Mashonaland Central, where Zanu PF boast stronghold, said people of Zimbabwe voted for "indigenisation and land".
"Zanu (PF) policies represented blacks of this country's needs as opposed to MDC, who always wanted to make Britain, US and Europe happy at the expense of its people.
"We all know that the current suffering the country endured over the past decade is as a result of MDC's invited sanctions. It is not Mugabe's economic mess, but MDC induced suffering in order force the electorate vote for them. We taught the bastard a lesson," said Machirori.
Herbert Humbasha of Masvingo, said the meaning of "free and fair" to MDC is when Morgan Tsvangirai and MDC won even without campaigning.
“To them (MDC), when Zanu PF wins, the elections are not free and fair.....but when Zanu PF loses, the elections are always pronounced free and fair. This is purely rubbish, sickness and madness at its worst,” he said.
In Matabeleland, Busi Sibanyoni said she voted for Zanu PF because they were the only party with people at heart.
"These new parties are only there for the leaders' enrichment. We have seen Tsvangirai sleeping with several women and girls, some of them were impregnated and dumped.
"Above all, we all know that the current suffering we are in is because of MDC induced economic sanctions so as to lay the blame on president Mugabe for taking back the land from white,” said Sibanyoni.
Tsvangirai on Thursday dismissed the poll as a sham.
This was despite a general feeling among observers the election was credible.
