Kenyan MP storms police station to free official held on drug charges

16 August 2016, 13:59

Nairobi - Drama ensued at a Kenyan police station after a member of parliament, together with youths, stormed the facility to demand the release of an area official held on drug charges.

MP John Kihagi of Maraigushu Constituency in Naivasha, Nakuru County, some 200km west of the Kenyan capital Nairobi, accused the police of stage managing the arrest to antagonise the area chief identified as Peter Irungu.

According to The Citizen, trouble started after police raided the sub-chief’s house on Monday morning and allegedly recovered fifteen rolls of bhang before arresting him.

The move angered area residents who marched to the police station, pointing the finger at a nominated Senator Ben Njoroge who had reportedly fallen out with the chief.

Naivasha sub-county commissioner Isaac Masinde had to intervene to cool tempers, The Star reported, before ordering that the arrested government officer be released on free bond.

Addressing the farmers, Masinde said that an inquiry file had been opened following the allegation that the sub-chief was found in possession of the drug.
