WATCH: Joice Mujuru addresses supporters in South Africa

18 September 2016, 12:37

Harare – Former Zimbabwean vice president Joice Mujuru, now leader of the opposition Zimbabwe People First party, has reportedly taken a swipe at President Robert Mugabe, accusing him of abandoning the ideals of the liberation struggle.

According to The Standard, Mujuru said this while addressing a rally in Pretoria on Saturday.

Mujuru accused Mugabe of becoming "another Rhodesian leader in the mould of Ian Smith".

"We went to war because we thought that by replacing the white racist leaders, we would have a better life. But it seems we only succeeded in removing the white racists but the leadership style has not changed," she was quoted as saying.

An SABC report said that Mujuru was in South Africa to drum up support in the build-up to Zimbabwe's next elections scheduled for 2018.

Mujuru launched her party early this year to challenge Mugabe, 92, after she was expelled from the ruling Zanu-PF in 2015 on allegations that she wanted to topple the nonagenarian.

Watch the video below as Mujuru speaks in Pretoria.
