Zim man charged with rape while country battles with escalating rape problem

05 August 2016, 08:08

Bulawayo – A Zimbabwean man has been arrested for raping his six-year-old niece as well as another eight year child, the state-owned Chronicle newspaper reported.

According to the prosecutor Simbarashe Manyiwa the rape took place during January this year.

The unnamed man reportedly lured the two girls into his room while they were playing outside his house.

The rape was discovered after the two girls told their parents about what had happened, which led to the man’s arrest.

The man is expected to appear in the regional magistrate’s court on 10 August 2016.

This comes as the country is reportedly battling with an escalating rape crisis.

According to the Chronicle at least 325 people are raped every month in the country.

Most of the victims are girls between 11 and 15 years old, the report claims.

“This means that we’re having 81 plus rape cases on a weekly basis. These are very scary figures, and we’ve noted that most of the minors being raped are between the ages of 11 and 15 years,” national police spokesperson Charity Charamba was cited.
