Airtel wary of fraudsters

14 November 2013, 12:08

Lagos  -  The Executive Director of Airtel Nigeria, Deepak Srivastava has cautioned customers to be wary of fraudsters who are using the company's ongoing promotion to defraud them.

Srivastava’s warning follows reports of fraudulent text messages that some subscribers have been receiving informing them that they had won prizes in the Airtel Red Hot Promo.

The text messages, which the Airtel executive asked subscribers to disregard, aside from informing subscribers of a winning prize, also ask them to send personal and bank account details to redeem their prizes.

Srivastava in a statement said such text messages were not from Airtel.

He reiterated that the company did not demand for financial security information such as bank account numbers, ATM pins or cash to redeem prizes.

Srivastava therefore pleaded with Nigerians to be vigilant and confirm any notification on winning from Airtel’s customer care agent or the nearest Airtel Shop or office if in any doubt.

“We do not need anything from our customers in return for their prizes. In fact, we use a special number with multiple zero digits to contact customers and only the internationally accepted mode of identification is required from winners to claim their winnings,” Srivastava stated.

Meanwhile about 15 subscribers across the country have so far won N1million each in the Airtel's ongoing reward promotion.

The company is giving out N70 million and several other consolation prizes in the red hot promotion aimed a rewarding subscribers for their loyalty to the brand.

So far, 15 customers have emerged winners of the one million naira daily prize while another 100 have won Samsung smartphones and more than 44 000 other customers have also been credited with free airtime.

To participate and qualify for a chance to win millions of cash and other prizes, customers will need to engage in any of the activities such as recharging their lines or data services, purchasing a handset or data bundle, meet their 5X target, subscribe to “Talkmore” or join the Airtel network.

Each of these activities carries specific number of entries into the raffle draw and the higher the number of entries earned, the higher the chances of winning.

A major distinguishing feature of the promo is that customers carry over accumulated entry points every day throughout the promo so they can enhance the possibility of winning with every passing day.

The Airtel Red Hot Promo, which runs for 60 days is open to all prepaid and Zero Credit limit post-paid customers.

Winners of the Airtel Red Hot Promo are selected daily using a fully secure automated draw system certified and supervised by a leading process and applications audit firm, TCQ&A.
