Edo introduces e-tax payment scheme

16 January 2014, 15:08Henry Ifeanyi

Lagos - The Edo State Government has introduced an electronic tax payment system as part of efforts to tackle the problem of multiply taxation.

The state government said all eligible tax payers in the region would subsequently be issued a taxation identification number (TIN) to make the process of tax payment more convenient.

Governor of the state, Adam Oshiomhole, said nationally, the project was designed to cover all Nigerians irrespective of their areas of residence.

He said the exercise would help to eliminate multiple taxations, adding that it would be in the interest of the citizens as well as build a national databank.

The governor said that in Nigeria, tax was compulsory, and urged citizens of Edo to key into the exercise.

He also expressed hope that the effort would remove bottle necks and lead to greater efficiency in taxation.

The governor said that the exercise would bring a clearer picture of taxpayers as well as aid development.

Some states in the country like Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Kwara, Delta and Osun state have also adopted the system.
