Farmers to benefit from cargo programme

06 August 2013, 10:11Henry Ifeanyi

Lagos - Nigerian fresh produce farmers are poised to benefit from a new air cargo programme that the government is implementing.

The government is mulling a new terminal to cater for the farmers.

"The 'Air Cargo Revolution' has become expedient to bridge the one-sided trade as far as fresh fruits and vegetables are concerned,” Yakubu Dati, Coordinating General Manager on Information and Communication, Aviation Agencies, said.

Highlighting how farmers will benefit from the project, Dati said that the Aviation ministry and FAAN were currently laying the groundwork that would open a new world of opportunities.

"Fresh tropical fruits such as oranges, pineapples, mangoes, tangerine, paw paw, grapes ,cashew, bananas, vegetables, flowers and legumes grown in the country are soon to head to international markets in Europe and the US where they would compete with  similar produce from around the world,"
Dati said.
