Katsina craft centre gets Singapore boost

16 January 2014, 08:42Augustine Osayande

Abuja - Singapore has pledged to assist the Katsina State develop its Youth Craft Village to ensure continued training of youths in various vocational skills.

Sulieman Kuki, Special Adviser to the State Governor on Science and Technology, disclosed the arrangement.

Kuki said a delegation from the Asian country was in the state recently and had toured the craft village to inspect facilities and observe training sessions.

“The delegation had agreed to look into ways of collaboration and assistance in the development of the craft village, and modalities on how the assistance is to be made would soon be concluded,” said Kuki.

He said the centre was borne out of need to make youths self-employed as government was no longer able to meet all the employment needs of the teeming youths.

“Although the centre was the only one in the state, there are however plans to establish similar centres in Daura and Funtua senatorial zones with an initial budget allocation of N200 million made for the project,” he added.

The Special Adviser said several states had their youths trained at the centre.

About 150 from Borno State recently graduated while Niger Republic also had some of its youths training on yearly basis at the centre.
