LIRS shuts 7 companies over tax evasion

21 September 2012, 16:04

Lagos - The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has sealed seven companies for over N90.7 million tax debts in the last three days.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports on Friday in Lagos that four of the companies were shut on Wednesday over a tax debt of N82.8 million.

The others were sealed on Thursday for owing N7.9 million.

Mrs Folasade Afolayan, Head of Distrain Unit of LIRS, told NAN that the exercise would be a continuous one.

She said that payment of tax was a civic responsibility for everyone and that taxes should be paid promptly.

Afolayan said that it was when taxes were paid promptly that government could function effectively.

She advised residents to cooperate with tax officials while they performed their duties.

``It is an offence to assault tax officials and anyone doing that will be dealt with accordingly,`` she said.
