MTN invests US$1.8 billion for expansion

28 May 2013, 10:02

Johannesburg -  MTN Nigeria has invested US$1.8 billion to improve its network in the country.

The money will be used to upgrade existing base stations as well as rolling out latest technology on the radio networks throughout the West African country.

"Concerning our network optimisation and expansion, we have committed in excess of US$1.8 billion to the exercise in the last 12 months.

"Our on-going network modernisation goes beyond just rolling out latest technology on the radio networks (towers) but also involves preparing the core and access networks for the latest technology," said MTN Nigeria General Manager responsible for Corporate Affairs and Corporate Services Division, Funmilayo Omogbenigun.

Responding to questions from CAJ News, Omogbenigun said MTN Nigeria was also working with the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) with the hope of deploying the Long Term Evolution (LTE) once the spectrum was available.

The company, he said, had deployed several innovative solutions on the network that would allow a seamless migration to LTE when the time came.

"In terms of timing, LTE is dependent on the availability of spectrum. Nigeria as we speak is currently in the process of implementing the digital dividend, migrating analogue broadcast services to digital and freeing up these analogue spectrum for use by the telecommunications providers," Omogbenigun said.

MTN Nigeria is the largest mobile network operator in the country with over 60 million network subscribers.

This is a major share in a country with a population of more than 162 million.
