Lagos - The Nigeria Communications Commission, (NCC) has begun investigations to that would culminate in he punishment of culprits using the name of the commission to defraud telecoms subscribers.
The commission said certain persons had been sending text messages to telecoms subscribers asking them to redeem a winning prize in a promotion purportedly been carried out by the NCC.
Believing the promo to be true, unsuspecting subscribers have been defrauded of money while attempting to redeem their prizes.
The commission disassociated itself from the fraud saying it was not involved in any kind of promotion.
The agency also said it was aware that several unsuspecting citizens had fallen victim to the fraudulent text messages believe them to be from the NCC.
Following the plethora of complaints by such victims, the commission said it had formally begun investigation to find out the sources of such messages and arrest the fraudsters behind them.
NCC Spokesperson, Reuben Morka, said several complaints received by the commission showed that subscribers were being enticed to log into a fake NCC website, log in their bank details or send recharge cards as a way to redeem their winning prizes.
"The NCC hereby announces that it is not engaged in any form of promotion. We disassociate ourselves from any message asking subscribers to redeem any winning prize. The public is hereby informed that such messages are not from the NCC and advised to ignore them as they are from fraudsters," Morka said.
He further said that those behind the fraud would be handed over the police for prosecution.
