Ikot Abasi - Save Nigeria Group (SNG), a non-governmental organisation, has decried the negligence of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to clean up its oil spills in areas of operation.
The State Co-coordinating Secretary of the group, Mr Godwin Umanah, said this on Wednesday when he visited Ikot Ada Udo Community in Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, polluted with oil spill from the company.
Umanah blamed the economic hardship and under development of the community to the failure of the company to clean up the oil spill in the area.
He said the refusal of SPDC to pay up compensation and undertake rehabilitation programme of the area was responsible for the backwardness and misfortune experienced by the people of the community.
Umanah also reacted to a recent preliminary objection filed by SPDC against the community that the community had no jurisdiction to sue them.
He decried the attitude of Shell which, he maintained, had exploited the area without a corresponding infrastructure development and human empowerment.
