Abuja - Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has so far recovered over N400 billion ($2.6billion) out of the $9.6 billion trapped in the petrochemical, mining and manufacturing areas in the extractive sector.
The recovery followed the audit of the sector from 1999 to 2008, reports Nation.
Zainab Ahmed, Executive Secretary, NEITI, stated this while reviewing the activities of the organization this year.
She acknowledged that huge sums of money are lost annually to corruption in the oil and gas sector.
She, however, expressed optimism that the loss could be effectively checked if the citizens continue to demand for accountability.
