Ondo State Govt. trains youths in farming

01 May 2013, 13:51

Akure - The Ondo State Government has established an agricultural training scheme to train youths in farming.

Kole Ogunsuyi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, said in an interview with the New Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that 100 youths had been trained in tractor operation and acquisition in Akure

He said that the state government was committed to increasing agricultural production, adding that the programme was designed to empower the youth and encourage them to engage in mechanised farming, which involved the application of modern technology to farming.

''The Governor sees it as a platform for youth empowerment, ensuring food sufficiency and that is the reason he gave increase budgetary allocation to agriculture sector in 2013 budget,'' Ogunsuyi said.

The permanent secretary said the trainees had graduated and the government encouraged to form a union called ''Tractor Owner and Operator Association of Nigeria, Ondo State branch.''

He said the government would facilitate the acquisition of tractors by the youths through collaboration with tractor trading companies.
