Dutse - The Jigawa Government said on Wednesday that it had begun the spraying of farms with insecticide to reduce the destruction of produce by the quela birds.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Rabiu Isa, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse that the spraying of farm produce was being carried out in four local government areas.
Isaidentified the four council areas as Guri, Birniwa, Kirikassama and Kafin-Hausa, saying the exercise was carried out in the affected areas in collaboration with the Jigawa Agricultural Development Agency (JARDA).
The commissioner said that the agency had deployed extension workers equipped with insecticide and sprayers to the affected areas.
"We recorded small number of quela birds and pest infestation in Hadejia area of the state and conducted insecticide spray to control the situation.
"Farmlands are now free of the ravaging pests," Isa said, adding that Jigawa would soon collaborate with the Federal Government on the aerial spray in the state.
