Abuja - A report published by The Punch suggests that poor Nigerians are going to be heavily billed by the time the new electricity tariff becomes operational from June 1.
This runs contrary to the assurance by both the minister of power. Prof. Bart Nnaji and the director general of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) that the new tariff would favour the poor.
The report According to the report, the class of consumers (known as Residential 1) which consumes between zero and 50kWh of electricity will pay N4 per kWh, as against the 2.20 per kWh paid now -- an 81.8 per cent increase.
