Shell MD advocates more environmental awareness

29 May 2013, 09:48

Port Harcourt -  Mutiu Sunmonu, Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), has advocated for greater awareness of the need to protect the environment at grassroots level.

Sunmonu noted in an interview with NAN that the protection and maintenance of the environment needed the commitment of all stakeholders.

"At the community level there is a lot to do; we need to get people to start to appreciate the need for them to also play a part in protecting the environment.

"Education is an important aspect where you can get a lot more people to begin to appreciate what their own responsibilities in protecting the environment should be.

"I really believe that this is an area we must focus on."

Sunmonu, who is also the Chairman of Shell companies in Nigeria, said that the company had been doing a lot in environmental issues.

He said that the company established a forum for constructive dialogue by all stakeholders on how best to protect the environment.

"We started a programme on how to improve transparency about what we do and this transparency initiative is second to none."
