Lagos - A recent report by the United States has faulted claims by the federal government that the country would achieve self-sufficiency in rice production in the year 2015.
The report by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), obtained by ThisDay, showed that the government decision to ban the importation of rice in 2015 poses a significant risk to the country’s rice farmers and millers.
While acknowledging that the government has undertaken improvement initiatives over the years, the report said the projected increase in rice production in 2013-14 falls short of consumption requirement.
The reported pointed out that Nigeria’s rice consumption is projected to increase to around 6 million tonnes in 2013-14, up about 11 percent from around 5.4 million tonnes in 2013 while rice production in 2013-14 is expected to reach around 2.7 million tonnes
