APC wary of imminent “capture” of terror kingpin Shekau

Abuja - The main opposition has raised the alarm that the Federal Government was planning to create a “fake” Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, to present before Nigerians in order to claim glory or winning the war on terrorism ahead of elections.

The opposition party through a statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity of its Presidential Campaign Organization (APCPCO), Malam Garba Shehu, said “credible sources” had alerted the APC that the “fake” Shekau might become a tool to blackmail members of the opposition by coaching the phantom terror chief to say he was working for the opposition party candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, in order to link its presidential candidate to terrorism as it had allegedly attempted but failed in the past.

Shehu wondered where the “new Shekau” will come from after government at several times in the past, announced that they had killed the insurgent leader.

“The charge to the military, that they should catch Shekau alive by the President in the last 24 hours lends credence to the report that indeed a fake Shekau is about being created,” said Shehu.

He said the profile of the leader of the insurgents showed that the man will likely not allow himself to be caught alive.

“It is both contradictory to the ideology he preaches and the psychological profile that the world has of him that Abubakar Shekau would allow himself to be caught alive,” Shehu said.

The accusations come amid reports the net was closing in on Shekau following reported success the military has secured over the terror group in recent days.

The military has previously reported to have captured the leader or suggested he had been killed by rival colleagues within the terror group.
