Abia governorship election tribunal begins sitting

2015-05-20 21:20

Umuahia - The Abia Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, headed by Justice Usman Bwala, commenced sitting in Umuahia on Wednesday.

Bwala said the tribunal was going to perform its duties with an open mind in order to deliver justice.

"The tribunal is expecting hard work, dedication and honesty from lawyers in the discharge of their duties before the tribunal.

"Lawyers should avoid presenting frivolous petitions and applications, considering the nature of the business we have to handle and the time frame we have to do it", he said.

Bwala later granted the motion seeking to serve Ikpeazu with a petition by substituted means before noon on May 21.

He also granted the motion seeking the inspection of election materials and issued an order that the exercise be performed on May 27, 28 and 30 with all respondents at liberty to attend.

Bwala adjourned the matter to June 11 for mention and re-trial.

Responding on behalf of lawyers, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abia, Chief Umeh Kalu, said: "Abia has always been lucky to have a formidable team of justices as tribunal members.

"I give you the assurance that the tribunal will receive the best cooperation from the lawyers."

The tribunal had entertained two motions presented by Alex Otti and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), through their counsel, Chief Chris Uche (SAN).

Uche sought leave to serve Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the petitions brought against him by Otti and APGA through substituted means and leave to inspect election materials.

It is reported that other members of the tribunal include Justices Ekerete Ebienyie and Olusegun Ogunyemi.
