Ambode's victory forces Agbaje into political retirement

2015-04-13 13:27

Lagos - Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate for the Lagos State gubernatorial election, Jimi Agbaje, has dropped any further ambition of ruling the state.

Agbaje lost the April 11, 2015 governorship election to All Progressives Congress’ Akinwumi Ambode as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) made the announcement on Sunday.

The returning officer of INEC in Lagos State, Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole, said the APC candidate, Ambode polled a total of 811 994 votes to defeat Agbaje of the PDP who garnered 659 788 votes.

“After contesting on two occasions and not winning, I will not be running again for the governorship election. There are other ways to serve my people, which I have to look into now. But certainly I will not be running for the gubernatorial poll again,” Agbaje said.

Agbaje first contested the governorship seat in 2007 under Democratic Peoples Alliance (DPA), but lost to the incumbent governor Babatunde Raji Fashola.

Ambode, during his acceptance speech on Sunday extended a hand of fellowship to Agbaje, invited him to join the governor-elect in moving Lagos forward.
