Catholics denounce alleged threat to Lagos indigenes

2015-04-07 08:47

Abuja - The Catholic Caritas Foundation of Nigeria (CCFN) has condemned the threat handed down by the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu, to  non-indigenes in Lagos to vote for the All Progressives Congress.

It was reported the non-indigenes were ordered to  vote for the governorship candidate of the APC, Akinwumi Ambode, "or else they will die in the lagoon."

The CCFN, an organ of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, said the Royal Father was “missing the point that Nigeria is a republic and a democracy and not a monarchy.”

The organisation advised the Monarch to withdraw his alleged threat.

Executive Secretary, Rev. Fr. Evaristus Bassey, said the CCFN condemned Akiolu’s comments, which he said amounted to threats and intimidation.

The organisation said although it understood the monarch’s genuine fear of losing the city to strangers, Lagos had been one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Africa for decades.

“Any citizen contributing to its economy and politics can be a bonafide resident,” said Bassey.

“We humbly call on the Oba himself to withdraw his curse and rather appeal to the people."

Ambode's faces stiff competition from Jimmy Agbaje of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to succeed Babatunde Fashola as governor.
