Abuja - The Rivers State government has ordered the immediate ban of motorcyclists in and around Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni local government area until the conclusion of elections.

The polls are scheduled for Saturday.

State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, disclosed the ban on the popular mode of transport during an interactive session with stakeholders at the Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Port Harcourt.

The event was held in preparation for Governorship and House of Assembly election.

The ban on cycles, Amaechi said came in the wake of alleged unlawful activities of militants and hired People's Democratic Party thugs.

"The killings of APC supporters have become alarming and the security operatives have assured us of protection of lives and property," he said.

He called on traditional rulers, opinion leaders and party faithful to assist government sensitize their people at the grassroots on the need for the people to come out en mass and exercise their franchise.

“What happened during the March 28 Presidential Poll will not occur any longer,” the governor said.

APC lost the Rivers State to the PDP during a controversial poll whose outcome the former is challenging.
