Lagos – The country's delayed general elections will be successful, Interior Minister Abbo Moro says, adding that the military would have enough troops in six weeks' time to secure the polls, according to a BBC report.

The electoral body, the Independent Electoral National Commission (INEC), announced the postponement of the elections over the weekend, citing security concerns.

INEC said troops needed for the security were busy fighting Boko Haram Islamist insurgents who have continued to unleash violence in the northeast for almost six years.

The report comes as Boko Haram leader Abubaka Shekau vowed in a new video on Monday that the group would defeat a regional force fighting the militants in the northeast, Niger and Cameroon.

"Your alliance will not achieve anything. Amass all your weapons and face us. We welcome you," AFP quoted Shekau as saying.

At least five African nations pledged to deploy 8 700 troops, police and civilians as part of a regional effort to fight Boko Haram.

African Union leaders will submit the plan crafted by Western and African experts to the United Nations Security Council for approval.
