Lagos - Germany's Foreign Affairs Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, appealed to contenders in the presidential election and their supporters to accept the will of the people and to bring the elections to a peaceful conclusion.

Muhammadu Buhari and incumbent Goodluck Jonathan of the All Progressives Congress and People's Democratic Party were in a closely-fought contest with counting so far favouring the former.

"It is important to adhere to democratic processes and clarify any accusations of manipulation with recourse to the legally prescribed channels, Steinmeier said from Berlin.

President Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari and their supporters are called on to respect the will of the electorate, not tolerate manipulations and to bring the election process to a conclusion with respect for Nigeria's democracy.

The polls were the most closely-fought since the return to civilian rule in 1999.

Despite some hitches forcing the poll to spill to Sunday, international election observers have commended the election process as  largely free and transparent.

That is a good sign and an important step forward for democracy in western Africa, said Steinmeier.
