Jonathan begs Sultan, Emirs for support

Sokoto - Following the postponement of the general elections by six weeks, President Goodluck Jonathan has stepped up efforts to woo influential Nigerians, especially those of northern extraction to reconsider him for re-election, reports NewsDay.

Those being targeted in the new move are the Sultan of Sokoto,Sa’ad Abubkar III,  some powerful emirs, most of the first-class chiefs and religious leaders, including Imams and pastors from the north.

In reaching out to these people, President Jonathan plans to make use of some of his kinsmen, who are friends to some of the northern leaders.

It was gathered  on Monday that a respected monarch and a kinsman of the President, alongside Sokoto State deputy governor, Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, secretly visited the Sultan in his palace.

Jonathan’s kinsman, who arrived Sokoto with a presidential jet, headed straight for the Sultan’s palace where they held a closed-door meeting.
