Abuja - All Progressives Congress, Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari has stated that if he were successfully elected as the country's next president, he would make sure that the constitution be strictly abided to, Naij reported.

Buhari, who labelled himself as a "converted democrat", made the pledge during his address to the Interactive Session with the Nigerian Press Organisation, in Abuja.

Buhari added that he declined the opportunity to engage in a debate with President Goodluck Jonathan was due to the fact that there was no basis for a debate as the record of the PDP and Jonathan's administration were public record.

In an extract from Buhari's speech, he said: "I urge you to not relent in your role as watchdogs, to continue to be the voice of the people. The health of Nigeria’s democracy rests partly on you. Without a robust and thriving media, the masses would have no voice."

He failed however to respond to questions regarding his arrest of journalists in the past a a military leader, stating that he couldn't change the past, but could change the future.
