Abuja - The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned the nomination and confirmation of Senator Musiliu Obanikoro as a minister, PUNCH reports.

Chidi Odinkalu, Chairman of the NHRC, has come out as saying that allegations posed against Obanikoro are too serious not to be investigated through the relevant channels.

Odinkalu's position comes amidst allegations posed against leaders of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) that state that the ruling party may have employed soldiers to rig the Ekiti governorship election of last year.

According to reports, an audio tape allegedly caught the voices of Ayodele Fayose, Iyiola Omisore, Obanikoro and various others giving orders to soldiers regarding the arrest of several All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders ahead of the June 21 elections last year.

Odinkalu has lamented President Goodluck Jonathan's decision to nominate Obanikoro as a minister due to the weight of the allegations posed against him.

Odinkalu has suggested that a thorough investigation be conducted into the matter in order to maintain the faith of the Nigerian public into the conduct of the ruling party.

In addition, the NHRC boss has disagreed with an Appeal Court ruling against the deployment of soldiers during the elections.

He has come out as saying that security across the country is too fragile for police to handle, and maintain, alone.
