Police warns Imo residents against unlawful assembly

2015-03-30 18:28
Owerri - The Imo State Police Command has warned residents of the state against any form of unlawful assembly, stressing that anybody arrested in the act would be prosecuted.

A statement by the command made available to media on Monday in Owerri stated that information available to the Police indicated that a political party was planning to cause unrest.

The statement signed by Andrew Enwerem, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), warned youths against being used by anybody or group to cause trouble.

He said that nobody or group had police permission to embark on any form of demonstration across the state and urged the people to remain law abiding.

Enwerem further advised parents as well as community leaders to caution their wards, noting that security operatives would do everything to ensure that the state remained peaceful.

"We will like everybody to remain peaceful and calm; the situation in the country and the state since after the March 28 elections does not warrant any form of unlawful behaviour."

Enwerem, however, confirmed that security operatives made some arrests during last Saturday’s elections in parts of the state.

He, however, did not mention the names of those already in police net.

Chidi Ibeh, the Information commissioner and Sam Onwuemeodo, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, were among those arrested for alleged electoral offences.

Armed security men were allegedly seen at strategic locations within Owerri urban on Monday.
