Abuja - A visit to the United Kingdom by Muhammadu Buhari has thrust the health of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate into the spotlight.

While the opposition described the visit as a “working trip” the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) argued there was more to the trip than that.

Spokesman of his Campaign Organisation Garba Shehu explained the trip, arguing it had nothing to do with seeking medical attention.

He said Buhari will, in the course of the visit, hold meetings with key members of the British political establishment and interact with some global institutions with stakeholder interest in the affairs of Nigeria.

“Buhari would hopefully give a talk at the prestigious foreign policy hub, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatam House in London,” he added.

However the ruling PDP said the opposition party should stop “deceiving” Nigerians because the visit is for a “secret” medical treatment.

Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose, claimed Buhari the alleged secrecy shrouding the visit had has shown that the APC leaders, especially Senator Bola Tinubu, were covering up his true health status for their selfish gains.

“The truth is that Buhari travelled out to seek medicare in USA (passing through UK). If the APC people are saying otherwise let them publish the picture of Buhari boarding the plane and granting interview to Aviation Correspondents at the Abuja Airport.”

He added, “These APC political merchants should say the truth and save Nigeria from the possibility of another Yar’Adua experience. They should tell Nigerians that Buhari is actually sick and lack capacity to rule Nigeria and that they are only packaging him, hoping that he will become incapacitated if he becomes president so that they can take over power by proxy.”

Umaru Musa Yar'Adua was president for three years before his death in 2010 after a long battle with illness.

There has been previous speculation about the health of the former military ruler who is seen as the biggest threat to President Goodluck Jonathan stranglehold on power.
