Rivers police suspected of electoral foul play

2015-04-13 09:16

Abuja - Rivers State outgoing Governor, Rotimi Ameachi, has accused the police in the state of planning to doctor statements of persons arrested for electoral crimes in the area.

His Chief Press Secretary, David Iyofor, said information at the governor's disposal indicated the police want to doctor the statement of about 110 persons arrested for such offenses in Tai Local Government of Rivers State during Saturday’s election.

He said those arrested included 75 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, who were adhoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He said information indicated that police wanted to doctor the statements of about 110 persons arrested for electoral offenses and crimes in Tai Local Government of Rivers State during Saturday’s gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections.

They were allegedly arrested with the electoral material of nine wards after reportedly caught thumb-printing ballot papers for People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidates in the private residence of a PDP chieftain.

According to the governor, his administration had been reliably informed that the police now wanted to doctor their statements in a bid to exonerate the culprits.

Comment could not be obtained from PDP or police.

Eearlier, APC had demanded the cancellation of the results of Saturday’s governorship and State House of Assembly elections in the state and the conduct of fresh elections.

APC candidate, Dakuku Peterside, lost to his PDP opponent, Nyesom Wike, in the governorship election.
