Senate trio demands nullification of Akwa Ibom poll

2015-04-15 18:16

Uyo - Some senators representing Akwa Ibom States at the upper chamber of the National Assembly have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the last Governorship and State House of Assembly elections in the state.

Senators Aloysius Etok, Ita Enang, Helen Esuene made the demand at the National Assembly complex in Abuja on Wednesday, citing irregularities.

Addressing journalists, Etok said the call for the cancellation of the election became necessary after some consultation with their constituents.

“After due consultation with our constituents, we are now calling on INEC to cancelled the last Governorship and State house of Assembly elections in Akwa-Ibom State and re-schedule the election,” said  Etok.

He added that the state had been mirrored in the negative in the eye of international community after the last election.

“We are not talking base on party but we are talking about the state as stakeholders,” Etok added.

Esuene described the governorship and state house of assembly elections in the state as a “broad daylight robbery”.

“If the trend is allowed to continue, it will get worse,” Esune said.

The People’s democratic Party (PDP’s) Udom Emmanuel was declared the winner of the Akwa Ibom Governorship election with 996 071 votes compared to the All Progressives Congress’ Umana Okom Umana who polled 89 865.
