Benin - The Speaker of Edo 5th House of Assembly, Uyi Igbe, dissolved it on Wednesday to pave way for the inauguration of the 6th Assembly.

Igbe dissolved the legislature which started in 2011 after a valedictory sitting in Benin.

"The Edo 5th House of Assembly, which was inaugurated on June 6, 2011, having completed four years, hereby stands dissolved.

"I want to appreciate my colleagues and my party for the support. You have affected my life positively.

"This will be the last time I will preside over the House as the speaker."

Igbe who scored the 5th Assembly very high in terms of performance, attributed the success of the assembly to the grace of God, dedication and mutual cooperation.

According to the speaker, "I am thankful to God for being the first speaker to complete a four-year term without impeachment.

"The feat was achieved because I demystified the office of the speaker."

Igbe said the House sat for 746 days and passed 30 Bills and 152 resolutions from 2011 to date.

The Majority Leader of the House, Philip Shaibu (APC-Etsako West) commended the speaker for his stewardship and for being a detribalised leader.

"This is a time to reflect on the past, it is unfortunate that some lawmakers were misled along the way and they are not here today to witness the winding up of the 5th assembly with us.

"I remember one of our colleagues, Mr Peter Aliyu, who died during the 5th Assembly; may his soul rest in peace.

"I forgive those members who sponsored thugs to destroy the legislative quarters and made an attempt on our lives."

The majority leader thanked the media for their role in promoting national unity.

According to him, "it was a rare privilege and honour to serve my constituency in the 5th Assembly".

Other lawmakers who spoke during the session thanked their constituents for the mandate given to them to serve.

Kingsley Ehigiamusor (PDP-Igueben) and Emmanel Okodowa (PDP-Esan North East II), defected to the All Progressives Congress before the dissolution the House.
