UN envoy lauds Nigeria polls as worth emulating

Abuja - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West and Central Africa, Mohammed Ibn Chambas, has commended President Jonathan for his statesmanship following the outcome of the general elections.

Chambas conveyed UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon's personal admiration for Jonathan’s “exemplary leadership’’ with regard to the conduct of the general elections held on March 28.

“We are hoping that other African countries who are holding elections this year will learn from the good example of Nigeria,” the envoy said.

Jonathan lost the polls to former military dictator, Muhammadu Buhari.

He conceded defeat at congratulated the winner, who takes over towards the end of May.

Meanwhile, Chambas told Jonathan he was leading a UN team that is visiting countries affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.

These include Chad, Cameroon and Niger.
The UN Special Representatives reaffirmed the readiness of the organisation to support the on-going effort by Nigeria and other countries in West and Central Africa to end terrorist attacks against their citizens.
