10 things you should know about the Golden Globes 2014

Los Angeles – It’s the first glitzy red carpet event that will kick off the 2014 award season and it promises to be a must-watch event!

The Golden Globe Awards usually serve up loads of comedy and laughter as the movie and TV stars join forces in a not-to-be-missed event.

Here’s a list of 10 Golden Globe 2014 facts you absolutely have to know:

1) This year will be the 71st Golden Globe Awards.

2) This year the ceremony will take place on Sunday, 12 January.

3) South Africans can watch live footage from the red carpet from 01:00 on E! (Channel124 on DStv).

4) The full event will be broadcast live in South Africa on M-Net Movies Premiere (Channel 103) at 03:00. Channel24’s dedicated team of celebrity stalkers will also be live blogging the event and will keep you updated as everything unfolds. For those who can’t be bothered to wake up early a repeat of the full event will be broadcasted on M-Net (Channel101) at 20:30 on Monday, 13 January.

5) The Golden Globe Award is an American accolade bestowed by the 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) recognising excellence in film and television.

6) The broadcast of the Golden Globe Awards, telecast to 167 countries worldwide, generally ranks as the third most-watched awards show each year, behind only the Oscars and the Grammy Awards.

7) HFPA was willing to pay Tina Fey and Amy Poehler $4m each to host the Golden Globes awards ceremony for a second time.

8) In the acting categories, Meryl Streep holds the record for the most competitive Golden Globe wins with eight.

9) The first Golden Globe Awards were held in January 1944 at the 20th Century-Fox studios in Los Angeles.

10) Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick's daughter, Sosie Bacon, has been named Miss Golden Globe 2014 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The annual title is traditionally given to the daughter (or son) of a celebrity, and their responsibility is to assist in handing out the awards.
