Atlantic City - Controversy erupted on Sunday after the winner of the Miss America pageant was crowned.
Nina Davuluri became the first contestant of Indian heritage and the second consecutive contestant from New York to win the Miss America pageant.
This sparked outrage on social media as many felt that Davuluri was not “a true American”.
The tweets that followed the pageant in Atlantic City didn't focus on how it's the second consecutive year that a Miss New York has taken the crown, or about the judge's questions.
They were about Davuluri's heritage, CNN reported.
"If you're #Miss America you should have to be American," said one Twitter user.
"WHEN WILL A WHITE WOMAN WIN #MISSAMERICA? Ever??!!" screamed another.
But this isn’t the only controversy surrounding Davuluri’s win. She reportedly called Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan, 24, “fat as fuck.”
Hollywood Life quoted the source that spoke to the Post and said the new Miss America “invited friends back to her hotel room after her win. A girl in the next room overheard their conversation, and was so offended she decided to tape part of it.”
The insider continued: “A friend of Davuluri was supposedly heard making racist remarks, and Davuluri is allegedly heard on the tape blasting Miss America, saying, ‘Mallory’s fat as fuck.’”
A rep for Miss America said there wasn’t any validity to the story, and according to Hollywood Life, the 24-year-old beauty took to her Facebook page to set the record straight, International Business Times reported.
“I want to apologize for the awful statements made by people in my room,” she wrote.
“There were people who claimed to be my supporters and said things I never agreed with, nor supported…I was never a part of the words or statements that may have been hurtful…I’m sorry if someone said something that was inappropriate.”
