Ellen DeGeneres wins14th People's Choice award

09 January 2014, 11:33

Los Angeles - The fans made their top picks in television, music and film at the 2014 People's Choice Awards and deemed Ellen DeGeneres their favourite daytime TV host, making her the woman with the most People's Choice honours - a total of 14 trophies.

"As a young girl growing up in New Orleans, if anyone would have told me I was going to win 14 People's Choice Awards, I (...) I mean 12, yes. Thirteen? Maybe. But 14?" joked DeGeneres, who said she wanted to make The Ellen DeGeneres Show the show for everyone - old, young, black, white, gay or straight.

"As a matter of fact, just yesterday I was talking to this lovely African-American woman and she told me she was single and she works 80 hours a week to get by and she looked forward to coming home every night and watching me, and that woman's name is Oprah Winfrey. I think I am doing something right."

The show kicked off on Wednesday night with Sandra Bullock receiving the award for favourite movie actress.

Presented the award by fellow actor Sean Hayes, Bullock said, "I know this looks like I spent lonely Friday nights just voting for myself, but I didn't. An actor can't do what they do without hundreds of amazing people working for them, with them, alongside them." She went on to thank her The Heat co-star, Melissa McCarthy, the crew of her hit space film Gravity and her son, Louis.

The Heat was chosen as favorite comedic movie.

Star-studded show

Justin Timberlake picked up an award for favourite album, The 20/20 Experience. He thanked his "beautiful wife", Jessica Biel, "for teaching me patience and the little things like just putting the dishes in the dishwasher. It goes a long way. Fellas, you're welcome."

A pregnant Drew Barrymore, who joked that DeGeneres had called her fat backstage, presented her Blended co-star, Adam Sandler, with the comedic movie actor award.

After debuting her talk show The Queen Latifah Show in 2013, fans crowned Queen Latifah their favourite new talk show host.

The star-studded show featured appearances by Jessica Alba, Heidi Klum, Zac Efron, Anna Faris and Michael B Jordan.

Sara Bareilles performed her hit Brave, and country star Brad Paisley took the stage to sing The Mona Lisa.

Hosts Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs kicked off the show with a gut-busting set of wisecracks. Dennings' dry delivery cutely blended with the Behrs' quirky disposition, making the stars of hit show 2 Broke Girls a savvy riot.

Dennings joked, "She's the Hathaway, I'm the Franco," in reference to Anne Hathaway and James Franco, who hosted the Academy Awards in 2011.

With help from fellow actors Ian Somerhalder, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Arsenio Hall, Ian Ziering, Kaley Cuoco and Christina Aguilera, Dennings and Behrs, who play waitresses on their show, took the orders of some of these nominees for a hilarious introductory skit.

The People's Choice Awards are broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
