Lagos - Veteran Nigerian guitarist, Fatoke Abiodun, has been sentenced to three years in jail for drug trafficking.
Appearing at Lagos Federal High Court, he pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful exportation of more than 1.5kg of cocaine during his arrest on New Year's Day.
Abiodun was arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.
The veteran, who played guitar for King Sunny Ade for over three decades, was caught while attempting to board an Air France flight to Italy.
Pleading for mercy, the 62-year-old said he was a father of 12 and was driven into the crime by poverty.
He was remorseful.
"That was the first time I trafficked drugs. I did it out of frustration because at my age, I could not provide for my family. I am ashamed of myself," he said.
