Lagos - Musician, Dr Sid, says that music has united Africa, making the continent one big country.
Sid made the statement at the final pre-award party of the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) 2014 held in Lagos late on Friday.
He said that the awards had helped to break international African borders and united the continent through music.
"It is beautiful to see music cross borders and make countries look like states; it has made Africa ready to take on the world. We are able to relate freely with other countries through our music and the people of Africa appreciate us and see us as part of them. This has helped to foster unity and spirit of oneness across the African continent,’’ he said.
Mr Alex Okosi, Senior Vice-President and Managing Director of Viacom International Media Networks Africa, owners of MTV Base, said the awards were instituted to celebrate the African continent.
"We want the awards to be a continent-wide celebration worthy of presenting the African continent to the world; it’s not a country-wise celebration but a celebration of the best of the continent.’’ he said.
Sid, Davido, Mafikizolo along with P-Square, Kcee and Mi Casa were nominated for the Song of the Year at the MAMA 2014.
Nigerian artists, however, dominated the nominations with 18 nominations in 11 out of the 15 categories of the awards.
