Copenhagen — A Danish court has jailed a Polish-born man for 13 days for stealing Chinese actress Liu Tao's hotel room safe, which contained jewelry and watches estimated to be worth some 4 million kroner ($536,100).
Liu attended Tuesday's custody hearing at Copenhagen's City Court where the unnamed suspect explained that he broke into a random room at the downtown Hotel Kong Frederik on Sunday evening.
The 33-year-old man who was arrested Monday with the safe told the court he removed it without knowing whose room it was or whether it contained valuables. According to the indictment, the safety box contained, among other things, three rings, a pair of earrings, a high-end watch and cash.

Most of the valuables have been recovered. However, the man — who pleaded guilty — argued in court there was less cash in the safe than stated in the indictment. He is being held in custody while police investigate the theft and will eventually be tried.
Tabloid Ekstra Bladet said Liu, who starred in the movie "The Last Concubine," was in Denmark to help promote a Danish shoemaker.
