Abuja – If you’re one of those people (read: all of us) who sometimes gets carried away while having a good time with friends just to end up punishing your liver with alcohol, here’s how to restore its health.
Dr. Nancy Reau, the vice president of the American Liver Foundation's Board of Directors in Illinois, came up with these simple tips on keeping your liver healthy, Huffington Post reports.
Dr. Reau says the liver’s main function is to filter toxins like alcohol and byproducts of medication from our blood as it goes through our digestive systems.
Tips for a healthy liver:
1. Balance your diet
Balance your diet without taking extreme measures and eliminating some foods completely before later continuing your bad habits. Look to high-fibre vegetables and lean proteins like chicken breasts, egg whites and fish.
2. Get fit (or at least get moving a little more)
Dr. Reau says a exercise produces anti-inflammatory signals and a little extra muscle on the outside helps clear toxins on the inside.
3. Go easy on the bottle
While drinking some alcoholic drinks in moderation might have health benefits, weekend benders can cause permanent liver damage and other severe health problems. Drink lots of water and don’t fear coffee – it has been linked to a lowered risk of alcoholic cirrhosis.
