9 Christmas movies to get you into the holiday spirit

12 December 2016, 12:08

Don’t feel very merry yet? You might need to watch one of these.

The Holiday

Two women who’ve never met decide to swap houses for the holidays. Iris lives in a quaint little cottage in Britain and Amanda lives in a mansion in America. The two decide to take a break from their own (love) lives, but end up finding it where they least expect it. It’s a great film to watch with your S.O or your girlfriends if you want something fun to watch that’ll make you giggle.

Home Alone 1 and 2

Bring on the nostalgia! Little Kevin McCallister gets left behind when his family goes on holiday and he’s having a great time until burglars target his home and he needs to think of clever ways to protect it.

In the sequel, Kevin accidentally goes to New York instead of following his family on their flight to Florida. He gets to roam the Big Apple and have some fun, but then runs into the same crooks who tried to rob his home in the first movie. Now he has to get rid of them again in a city where he doesn’t have home field advantage.

Love Actually

Stop rolling your eyes. This is actually a really great Christmas movie, even if it’s been on TV so many times you could scream. Because Christmas is a time for love, right? And what better way to spend it than to watch a hilarious comedy all about love?

Elf

Watch Will Ferrell as the loveable, but somewhat misguided elf, Buddy, who finds out he’s actually human and was transported to the North pole accidentally as a toddler. He then tries to track down his real father (who turns out to be a grumpy businessman) in New York.  It’s seriously funny and utterly quotable.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Is this a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie? The answer is both. Tim Burton’s most famous work shows what happens when Jack Skellington tries to take over from Father Christmas.

Die Hard

John McClane is on his way to visit his wife and daughters on Christmas Eve. He meets up with his estranged wife at her work holiday party, but the festivities are interrupted by a group of terrorists (which includes Alan Rickman in one of his greatest roles) who take over the building and John realises that it’s up to him to save all the hostages. If you love Christmas, but want something other than the smushy stuff, definitely watch this.

While You Were Sleeping

Sandy B plays sweet and innocent so well, doesn’t she? In this flick she’s a lonely transit worker (hey, we didn’t say it was believable) who stops her crush from being hit by a train and then, at the hospital, his family confuses a misplaced comment from her to mean that she’s his fiancée and she doesn’t correct them. Totes awks, right? But wait, there’s more. She then starts to fall for his brother! Oh, and it all takes place around Christmastime when family seems most important.

Bad Santa

If you love Christmas and dark comedies, then this is perfect for you. Will and Marcus run a con every year posing as a mall Santa and his elf to rip off shopping malls, but this year things are a bit different. Willie is a depressed alcoholic and his behaviour draws the attention of the security guard (played by the late, great Bernie Mac), then he makes friends with a small boy and Willie begins to think there might still be some hope for him.
