Abuja - A man whose crime horrified jurors was sentenced to life in prison yesterday.
Shortly before sentencing, Arthur Morgan III offered an apology to the mother of his child, but not for the girl’s murder- rather that he would no longer be able to live with the child’s mom.
As for the two-year-old daughter whom he killed by hurling her off a bridge into a creek still strapped into her car seat so that she drowned, he suggested that she was “in a better place”, according to Huffington Post.
His astounding lack of remorse was backed up by rambling statements in which he attempted to portray himself as a loving, protective father; he claimed that he was sorry that his relationship with the child’s mom had deteriorated after it had “blossomed” into his daughter and that all his actions prior to the callous murder were to ensure the safety of the mother and her child.
The couple had been arguing about visitation rights, and Morgan was supposed to have been taking his daughter to watch the movie Happy Feet 2 when he took her life.
The motive for the killing was reportedly revenge: he killed his daughter to hurt the child’s mother after their relationship collapsed. Knowing it would hurt his ex, he tied the child still strapped into her car seat to a car jack and threw her into a creek. While she was only partially submerged, he drove off, leaving her to drown. The coroner stated that it would have taken five minutes for the child to drown.
After he was sentenced to life in prison, the killer father winked at the courtroom.
