How to make your own potting table

18 November 2015, 07:01

Shopping list:

• 1m x 600mm aluminum flashing

• self-tapping chipboard screws

• paint

• cupboard door

• shelf

• chicken wire

• electric screwdriver

• hammer

• staple gun

How to do it:

Aluminum is the most practical solution and though the sheeting is expensive, aluminum flashing is just as good and available by the metre at most hardware stores.

As the table will get wet, you seal it with some leftover low sheen enamel paint. Once that was dry, you tackle the aluminum flashing, which is very malleable and was fairly easy to bend and shape into position.

To attach it, tap a nail lightly through to create a pilot hole and use an electric screwdriver to fasten it in. Then gently hammer the flashing over the table edges to get it to take on the shape of the tabletop.

NOTE: Make sure that the corners are hammered flat to prevent any sharp edges.

Finishing touches:

Make a door by cutting an old window frame to size and attach plastic shade mesh (available at most hardware stores) to the frame with a staple gun. The mesh is great as it allows the free flow of air so that damp tools and pots can dry – and because it’s plastic it won’t rust.
